Edsall Emerges on Quiet Notre Dame Search

Unlike the last time Notre Dame had a coaching search for football, the rumors and leaks have been kept to a minimum.  Athletics Director Jack Swarbrick has kept a tight lid on the process unlike the previous AD Kevin White.

It really backfired for White.  Notre Dame was embarrassed as the Irish were turned down by many potential candidates.

Now many media outlets including the Chicago Tribune are reporting that UConn coach Randy Edsall has emerged as a candidate.  Ironicaly, Edsall's Huskies went a long way in sealing the firing of Charlie Weis.  UConn defeated the Irish on Senior Day in South Bend.

Once again, Edsall may prove to be a great coach, but ND needs a lot more championship experience than Edsall provides.  Cincinnati's Brian Kelly is still in the mix, and may even be the front runner.  Both Kelly and Edsall have and have nice resumes, but not what ND demands.  Edsall and Kelly are opposite with their strengths.  Edsall is a defensive minded coach.  Kelly's Bearcats rack up the points with a wide open offense.

Tony Kornheiser made the point yesterday on ESPN's PTI that I have been saying all along.  Kelly and/or Edsall should not be the Irish first choice.  Notre Dame needs to go big game hunting.  Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, Butch Davis, heck even Pete Carroll.   That might seem absurd, but you could make the case for each one of them ending up at ND.  For example, USC is still waiting for the conclusion for the Reggie Bush investigation.  Who knows what will happen to USC.  Carroll had a rough year this season.  Maybe he would welcome a new challenge.  He is the longest of long shots though.  Carroll is the King of LA.  Snowy South Bend may not be as appealing!
